Hmmm.  Son is, apparently, off on his Duke of Edinburgh hike thingy this weekend.  Or at least, he might be.  Notice has been not so much short as non-existent... so far it's just rumour and hearsay!  As exam season is just ending, they've only been at school for exams, and it's all a bit chaotic.

Then again, it's at least equally possible that he was told of the date and has simply forgotten.

Anyway, a mad dash into town yesterday (in the rain, with baby) was needed in order to spend a small fortune on walking boots, socks, etc.  Apparently tents etc can be borrowed - I do hope so.  Tent buying is beyond the budget right now, I'm afraid.  (Although that's reminded me of the famous sale sign, "Now is the winter of our discount tents", which has cheered me up!)

It's raining today, too.  Fingers crossed for a sunnier weekend!

Hello, and welcome to my journal.  I'm hoping to use this space to record milestones and day-to-day events in the life of my baby, Caroline.... stupefyingly boring to most people, I'm sure, but endlessly fascinating to us!

I'm 39; live in Scotland; married; mum to a 16-year-old boy (currently in the throes of his Standard Grade exams) and a five-month-old baby girl.  We live in moderate comfort in the leafy suburbs, although life was not always thus;  I was a single parent to my son for a number of years, with all the accompanying delights and challenges!

I'm on maternity leave at the mo and loving it, though will have to return - reluctantly - to work in January next year.  Still trying to come up with ways ot avoid it, but failing that mythical lottery win (unlikely, since I don't play), it's looking unavoidable... sadly, life in the leafy suburbs comes with a hefty price tag.  I've put in an application for part-time working, though, and am waiting to hear the outcome of that.

Really enjoying being at home with the baby, though we do try to get out and about as much as possible to see other mums and babies - which is hampered a bit by a shyness which I really should have got over by my age!  Caroline did enjoy a "Rhyme Time" session at the local library this morning - she liked the songs and actions, and was thoroughly exhausted by the end!  She also likes her swimming "lessons" - just familiarisation with the water, really - on a Friday.  She's changing every day at the moment and it's just so lovely to watch.

She's still exclusively breastfed at the moment, but will be starting solids in a few weeks.... that should be interesting!
